Cooking Demonstration & Samples! Learn to make poutine using an authentic traditional recipe from our A-Z World Food resource. Take-home recipe included.

Poutine is one of Canada’s most iconic dishes, originating in rural Quebec during the late 1950s. It consists of crisp French fries topped with fresh cheese curds and smothered in hot gravy. The dish is said to have first appeared in casse-croûtes (snack bars) in small Quebec towns, where the combination of fries and cheese curds was popular before gravy was added to hold everything together. At first considered a working-class fast food, poutine quickly spread across Quebec and later throughout Canada. Today, it is found everywhere from diners and pubs to high-end restaurants offering gourmet variations.
